The city of Surfside Beach is fighting against beach erosion. The ocean literally washes underneath the first row of beachfront homes, and the city is relocating or demolishing the homes to prepare for a massive beach renourishment program.

Seco Sinkhole was dry for more than a year before the rainsthis summer filled it up. Scientists say climate change caused by global warming could cause more severe weather cycles like this, with drought followed by violent storms.

John Rappole, a research scientist for the Smithsonian National Zoological Park, says about 70 bird species are changing their ranges, generally northward and eastward. Rappole thinks global warming is causing the change.

Threatened wetlands

Rising sea levels and sinking land are threatening wetlands in Texas, which also threatens marine life and other species. Global warming and climate change are one cause of the rising sea levels.
