Today, Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, appeared on "Meet the Press," with Tim Russert. Russert interviewed Colbert about his recent announcement that he is running for president, although so far only in South Carolina. Russert seemed incredulous about Colbert's presidential bid, but Stephen set him straight, assuring Russert that he was very serious about his candidacy, and that this was not "a dream you will wake up from." Colbert's "Meet the Press" appearance, a required venue for any serious presidential contender, solidifies Colbert's intention to seek the White House. Let us know what you think about the substance, and the odds, of Colbert's White House bid.

Jeez people!!!!! 6 pages on Colbert????
He's a actor playing a real-life muppet, like Big Bird or Kermit the frog. Stephen Colbert doesn't exist, it's an act. Dennis Miller isn't, Rush Limbaugh isn't.

It's an act, pointing out how stupid and idiotic our government has become. The fact that Colbert can run and be viewed as a candidate should tell you something about politics today. We'll be debating about gay marriage, gee, guess what happened, Rome is burning. Katrina? What? Dead bodies floating around. California wildfires? 400,000 displaced? Iran war? huh?

Colbert is the political version of Britney and Paris. Mildly distracting for the audience; as well as cheap, easy and inoffensive to cover by the lazy media.

Colbert is not a fool. If he runs for office, people should take him seriously.

I would vote for Colbert instantly. We are talking quantum instantly. In fact I would sacrifice George Bush, Joe Lieberman, Nasty Pelosi, Paul Wolfowitz, William Kristol and Dick Cheney to the cosmos for his election.

Colbert is playing a fatuous and ignorant blow hard like Bill O'Reilly who he calls Pappa Bear.
Taking him seriously is really ridiculous. His comedy is subtle but smart and on the mark almost all the time.
His forte is a preening and arrogant though proudly uninformed Republican.
He is really close to many of the ones in D.C.

Don't get me wrong... I love Colbert, and find him hilariously dead on. But, doesn't Russert have more important things to do than play straight-man to Stephen's schtick?

Another example. Republicans and Libertarians constantly complain about social programs and any kind of welfare.

Colbert takes this to the logical, nth degree:

RUSSERT (Quoting Colbert's book): "Sorry, but retirement offends me. You don"t just stop fighting in the middle of a war because your legs hurt. So why do you get to stop working in the middle of your life just because your prostate hurts?"

COLBERT: Well, Tim, I, I just don"t understand pensions or Social Security. Why do you get paid after you stop working? That doesn"t make any sense to me.

RUSSERT: Abolish Social Security?

COLBERT: Yes.

RUSSERT: Abolish Medicare?

MR. COLBERT: Yes.

RUSSERT: Abolish all pensions?

COLBERT: Abolish tipping waiters and waitresses because I've gotten my food. They get paid by the hour. Why am I giving them extra money? That's all pensions and Social Security are. It's a tip at the end of your life.

Again, Colbert points out what these conservative arguments end up meaning, if carried to their dangerous conclusions. It's a healthy slap in the face to those who are mesmerized by the candidates' cliches.

Please tell me you get it now! Colbert is extremely useful in highlighting hypocrisies and exposing political cliches AS THEY HAPPEN.

To all the "media-nistas" who keep telling Stephen to stop his act, you STILL DON'T GET IT!

Each time an idiot like Fred Thompson makes a speech of meaningless platitudes and cliches, if Colbert parodies him by saying something similar but MORE wacky, then people who just heard Thompson will laugh at the stupidity of Thompson's words compared to Colbert's.

Colbert will immediately immunize Americans to any other idiot who tries the same code phrases and arguments. Listeners will become more discerning about the bullshit. They will also see what the Republicans' ideas mean, when carried to their logical conclusions.

Does that make sense? If a candidate says "I oppose gay marriage because it threatens my own love for my dear wife," but then Colbert follows this with:

COLBERT: Marriage is the basic building block of society. And if gay men get married, that threatens my marriage immediately because I only got married as a taunt toward gay men because they couldn"t.

RUSSERT: So it makes you feel insecure.

COLBERT: Well, I just don"t know why I got married other than to rub it in gay people"s faces.

Then it highlights how ridiculous is the whole argument about gay marriage threatening heterosexual marriage! See?

It's unbelievable that so many people take Colbert literally, with no awareness of the satire or irony. Even Barney Frank didn't get it. It's very discouraging.

What did he say? Gay marriage threatens his marriage because he only got married to taunt gay men because they can't get married? Hilarious!
